The Video Platform Provides Users Power to Decrease AI-Generated Media in Timelines

Users will soon have a new feature that enables them to cut down on the quantity of AI-made media appearing in their timelines. This step comes as the company revealed that it currently hosts over 1 thousand million AI-generated clips.

Testing and Rollout

The update is in a pilot phase over the next few weeks before a global launch. This development aligns with a rise in AI content, fueled by recent video-generation tools.

AI Proliferation Online

It has been noted that almost one in 10 of the fastest-growing channels on a competing service only show clips produced artificially. A significant portion of this material is classified as low-quality AI content, a label for inferior, factory-style content that is typically illogical or dreamlike.

Our research shows that a lot of users appreciate content made with AI tools, from digital art to educational videos, and we want to give people the option to adjust the amount of that, according to their own likes,” stated a company executive.

AI on the Platform

The platform disclosed that there are now 1.3 billion videos on its app labeled as made with AI. In total, more than 100 million pieces of content are uploaded to the platform daily, making AI-generated material a limited portion of its overall inventory.

User Control Features

Users will be able to reduce or increase the level of artificial media they view by opening the topic control feature in the app and choosing the AI content topic. Further subjects that can already be adjusted under the tool encompass politics, style, cosmetics, and dance.

Platform Guidelines

TikTok’s policies require users to tag lifelike AI-made content, and it forbids dangerous deepfakes of public figures or critical incidents. Any authentic-looking AI video that is unmarked can be deleted under its user guidelines.

In addition, the service will henceforth add an artificially created label to content made using its built-in AI features, or flagged by an collaborative effort for identifying AI-generated material. This action is intended to help prevent users from seeking to bypass the tagging system.

Educational Initiatives

The platform is also establishing a $2 million awareness program for experts and organizations to create informative material about ethical AI use. This program will support charitable organizations specializing in teaching coding and technology.

Content Safety Approach

The video-sharing app has defended its safety measures, amid controversy over proposals to cut jobs for hundreds of safety staff in the UK. It is set to eliminate hundreds of positions in its user protection team in its British office, with trade unions and digital protection specialists voicing alarm that humans are being replaced by AI moderation.

A trust and safety lead explained that staff-based oversight would still have a role, but artificial intelligence can protect employees by filtering out the most harmful content prior to it is viewed by staff. TikTok announced a 76% decrease in shocking and graphic content seen by human moderators over the previous year due to reliance on its machine learning processes.

We believe it is crucial to integrate people and machines to keep the platform safe,” the official commented. “We’ll have humans as part of that process, but we also think it’s very important to minimize viewing of unsafe media as rapidly, which is the area in which a significant AI assistance is proving valuable process content quickly.”
