Super Typhoon Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Large-Scale Evacuations Reported

The island nation has been hit hard by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, which left a minimum of two fatalities and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities reported that the massive storm caused widespread flash flooding, storm surges, landslides, and destructive high-velocity gusts, prompting the relocation of millions of people nationwide.

Extensive Damage and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, emergency crews documented floodwaters climbing to the tops of houses and residences washed out by strong flows.

“Our personnel saved 14 individuals who were trapped on the roof surrounded by water in a flood-prone area,” an emergency official stated. One resident also called in panic, reporting his home’s roof was about to be ripped off due to the storm. We rescued him along with four family members.”

By Monday, officials confirmed at least two deaths: a drowning victim on the island and a second individual killed when her house collapsed on Samar island.

Typhoon Strength and Projected Path

The super typhoon weakened to a typhoon on Monday morning while moving over the main island, where the capital is located.

According to meteorological authorities, the storm’s sustained wind speed dropped from 115 mph to 102 mph, but gusts peaked at more than 275 km/h.

The storm system is expected to lose strength while heading north toward Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The country’s emergency management agency indicated efforts were ongoing to evaluate destruction to infrastructure and homes.

Approximately thousands of shelters have been opened to temporarily house 92,000 families.

Recent Context and Environmental Factors

Fung-wong struck just days after Typhoon Kalmaegi, that claimed hundreds of lives with dozens unaccounted for before moving on toward Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Searches for those still missing were halted on Sunday over risks for rescue workers.

The climate crisis is causing cyclones more intense and common. This typhoon marks the twenty-first storm to hit the Philippines in 2025.

Scientists report that the rate of super-typhoons striking the islands has risen doubled over the last two decades.

International estimates suggest that severe weather events cause approximately US$3.5 million in damage for the Philippines annually.

The Philippine president declared an emergency declaration last week because of the severe damage caused by Kalmaegi and anticipated impacts from Fung-wong.
